MOHAVE COUNTY (ABC4 Utah) - Thanks to the internet, a tourist attraction near St. George is gaining national attention and more visitors every day. But what the world wide web says about the land isn’t the reality.
Although this land is public and free to visit, the Selenite here that makes this land sparkle at Glitter Mine is owned by a local miner - Russ Feller.
Feller loves rocks, he always has, and he’s turned his love of rocks into a money maker. He started Feller Stone in 1980 with his dad and brother. It’s a family run business in Veyo.
"We sell to dealers and distributors across the country,” says Feller.
Feller always enjoyed that children would visit the selentine mine he leases on the Arizona strip - just a 15-minute-drive from St. George. He'd purposely leave the remnants of the larger rock scattered on the hills so children could take one or two home and admire the sparkle.
But in the past two years the internet does what it always does - Glitter Mountain became a thing, including claims that the mine is abandoned. Families started heading down into the pit, bringing hammers and chisels and buckets
"You know, people digging on a rock or a wall...You know, that's not really cool,” said Feller.
Actually, it's stealing, and now Feller is stuck between a rock and hard place. His families livelihood is in that sparkly pit. Plus, he says the chiselers are undercutting the mine and making it unsafe.
The Bureau of Land Management is helping to spread the word: Please do not go in the pit.
"We just want to let the public know this is an active mine claim. The claimant has asked if people can honor his claim, and not mine his claim,” said Rachel Carnahan with the Bureau of Land Management
“The internet says things that just aren’t true. We’d appreciate people if they want a lot of it, to call us [instead of taking it themselves]”
