Trey Burke named Rookie of the Month for a 3rd time

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - The NBA announced today that Utah Jazz guard Trey Burke has been named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for games played during the month of April, marking the third month he has won the award.

Having already been recognized as the recipient in both December and January, Burke became the first player in franchise history to win multiple Rookie of the Month awards. Karl Malone was named NBA Rookie of the Month in December 1985, the only previous monthly rookie honor for the Jazz. The award, which has been given monthly since the 1981-82 season, was originally the NBA Rookie of the Month before splitting into Eastern and Western Conference Rookies of the Month in 2001-02.

Burke led rookies in assists (9.0 apg) and ranked third among rookies in scoring (15.6 ppg) during April. He placed second among first-year players in minutes, having logged 38.3 mpg on the month. He posted double-digit scoring efforts in five-of-seven April games, and handed out seven or more assists six times. Burke capped his rookie campaign with a 32-point, nine-assist, seven-rebound effort on April 16, during a 136-130 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in double overtime.

In 70 games (68 starts) overall on the season, the 2013 first-round draft pick (ninth overall) averaged 12.8 points and 3.0 rebounds, along with a team-leading 5.7 assists in 32.3 minutes per game. He was also selected to the 2014 BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge and won the 2014 Taco Bell Skills Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans.
