TOOELE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 News) A 26-year-old man died and his passenger was flown to the hospital in critical condition after hitting a concrete barrier at a rest stop in Tooele County Friday morning.
Utah Highway Patrol said the accident happened just after 5 a.m. when Skylar Sanger, 26, of West Valley City was headed west on I-80 near milepost 101 and entered the rest area at a high rate of speed, struck a concrete barrier near the entrance, slid sideways and impacted a parked semi-truck.
Sanger was killed on impact and his passenger, a 22-year-old from Salt Lake City was taken by medical helicopter to Mountain West Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver of the semi-truck, a 30-year-old from Florida, was asleep at the time of the accident and was not injured.
Troopers believe alcohol impairment was a factor in the accident.
