UPD: Suspect Rams Police Car During Pursuit, Officer Struck by Rolling Vehicle

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) A chase with a suspect began in Taylorsville and ended in Salt Lake City Friday evening.

Unified  Police Department says the chase began near 4700 S. 700 West when an officer pulled up behind 31-year-old Shawn M. Garfield who was in a car that had been involved in an earlier incident. As the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, Garfield backed up and rammed into the officer's car twice before fleeing the scene.

The pursuit went onto the freeway before ending on 800 South near 340 East when an off duty officer attempted to stop the fleeing suspect.  Garfield veered off to the side of the road and exited the vehicle. As the officer jumped out of his car, he was hit by Garfield's car, that was still in drive.

The officer was taken to the hospital in fair condition for an assessment.

Garfield was apprehended after another officer who was involved in the pursuit located him. He was taken to the hospital for an evaluation before being transported to the Salt Lake County Jail.
