UPDATED: Provo Canyon Re-Opens After Large Mudslide

The road is closed for an unknown amount of time

UPDATE 12 PM Provo Canyon update: All lanes on US-189 are open following closure today due to mudslide.

PROVO CANYON, Utah (ABC4 News) A mudslide has caused the closure of US 189 in Provo Canyon Saturday morning.

Utah Department of Transportation tweeted just before 2 a.m. the canyon was closed in both directions from mile marker 8 to mile marker 12.

Utah Highway Patrol said the slide, about 3 feet deep, covered both the north and the south lanes of travel, at the Sundance turnoff.

UDOT arrived on scene about 2 am and have been working to clear the mud and debris all morning. It is estimated that the closure could last 5-6 hours but officials are saying it could take much longer, asking motorists to use alternate routes.

Washington County Sheriff's Office also sent out a tweet indicating there currently is no travel to or from Provo.

ABC4 will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available.
