Hundreds gather for Juneteenth celebration

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - Today is one of the most important days in history for African Americans and they are celebrating.

Hundreds turned out at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley.

It’s called Juneteenth.  The day the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Betty Sawyer, a coordinator for Juneteenth, told Good4Utah, “We're celebrating freedom, we're celebrating opportunity. We're celebrating all the values, the diversity that we have and the rich, valued culture that African Americans bring to this country.”

The celebration moved from West Valley today to Ogden’s city amphitheater and it runs until 9 tonight.
