A preliminary report from the Medical Examiner released Tuesday said the bones found were from a female between the ages of 30-50.
SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) - A human skull along with other remains were found by hikers in Deaf Smith Fork Canyon Sunday afternoon.
According to the Unified Police Department, the hikers made the discovery at about 1:15 p.m., about one mile behind a private stretch of road.
"We can't tell what type of bones those were, but because of the skull that was found, it was definitely a human skull," said Lt. Brian Lohrke, Unified Police Dept.
Lohrke told ABC4 Utah that it's unclear how long the remains have been there, but pieces of camouflage clothing were also found close in proximity.
"Just the way that it looks and the items around it, it looks like it's been here a long time. But you can't tell because of the extreme conditions that we have here in Utah which can either speed up or delay decomposition. So it could have been as short as a year it could be as long as 50 years, we don't know."
Lohrke described the area where the skull and bones were found as "desolate" and said not many people hike in that area.
"Because of the private land here, it's not an area that's hiked often, especially where the bones were found -- it's off the trail, where if you had access to that trail, it's not an area you would normally go."
There are also some closed mines in the area, but it's too soon to tell if the remains are left over from that time period or not.
According to Lt. Lohrke, Forensics Investigators hope to use dental records to "help identify the victim in this matter."
Detectives will also look through missing persons reports to see if there are any matches.
"We have missing persons all over and a lot of times they somehow end up in the canyons here," said Lohrke.
The bones have been transported to the Utah Medical Examiner's Office.
