Hatch chief of staff tapped as senior aide to Trump

Salt Lake City, Utah- (ABC4 Utah) – A member of Senator Orrin Hatch's team is leaving to take on a key role with the Trump Administration.

Chief of Staff Rob Porter has been tapped as a Senior Aide to Trump.

The move provides the senator with another direct line to the White House.

Porter is embarking on the new journey after leading Hatch's team in Washington and Utah for nearly three years.

He's joining the Trump Administration as Assistant to the President and White House Staff Secretary.

Jason Perry, Director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics says the new position comes with a huge responsibility.

"They are controlling most of the traffic that's going to the President. If there is a piece of paper that someone wants to get to the President of the United States it's on his desk first, he makes the decision if it goes forward. He contacts the staff to get comment, he decides who's in the meetings to talk about correspondences given to the President of the United States," said Perry.

Perry knows Porter and says he's a perfect fit for the job.

Senator Hatch agrees, even though he's losing his top guy he applauds the selection.

In a statement he tells ABC4 Utah:

"President-elect trump has made an inspired choice. Rob is not only a brilliant leader; he is also a dear friend and a trusted confidante who has my full confidence and support."

Perry says that friendship is one that will serve Hatch well.

"Senator Hatch already has a good line of communication to President-elect Trump, and he did to the Obama Administration as well, but this is going to be a very important person that's literally outside the Oval Office helping to control the traffic in and out. So, that is great for Senator Hatch and I think it's good for the State of Utah to have someone representing us that is that close," said Perry.

Hatch promoted Senior Counsel Matthew Sandgren as his new Chief of Staff.

He is a Provo native.
