4 people cited after vandalising BYU cougar statue

The statue was located near the stadium

PROVO, Utah (ABC4 News) - Four people were arrested, cited and then released after vandalizing the BYU Cougar statue in Provo early Saturday morning.

Lt. Steven Messick, BYU Police, said they received a call about 4:50 a.m. after an individual saw four people spray painting the statue. Officers responded to the area and found four people inside a car which smelled very strongly of paint.

Once officers noticed the individuals had red spray paint on their hands and a U stencil inside the car, the four people admitted to the vandalism.

Messick said they were all arrested, cited for criminal mischief and then released. He was not certain if the individuals involved were students at the University of Utah or not.

The arrests come on the day of the 92nd edition of the “Holy War” between BYU Cougars and University of Utah Utes. The game is expected to start at 8:15 p.m.
