25k Jobs Launch Tour kicks off in Brigham City

Brigham City, Utah- (ABC4 Utah) – Business is booming in Utah, but not everyone is benefiting, That's why state leaders are making an effort to spread the wealth to rural Utah.

The goal is to create 25,000 new jobs in rural counties over the next four years. The effort is hitting the road, with the first stop in Brigham City, Utah.

It's home to one of five northern Utah facilities for global air bag manufacturer, Autoliv. The company is looking for people to join the team.

"We're looking for IT people, for engineers, for production type positions, for maintenance," said Human Resources Representative Shirlean Leavitt.

Filling some of those positions isn't the easiest task.

"Especially as we've automated, we've had a rough time getting controls engineering," said Leavitt.

She is hoping to connect with future employees at a job fair.

Hosted at the Utah State University extension in Brigham City, it's part of the 25k Jobs Launch Tour.

"We hear all the time about just how well Utah is doing economically, but that causes us, sometimes to forget that's not true everywhere in this state. In fact, we've got double digit unemployment in some of our counties," said Derek Miller, President and CEO of World Trade Center Utah.

With that in mind, Governor Gary Herbert set the goal to create 25,000 new jobs in the next four years in his  State of the State address.

The idea is to build the economy in the 25 Utah counties outside of the Wasatch Front.

One of the first steps is to get into rural communities to build partnerships with local officials, and businesses.

"Every county is unique, and so, we'll meet with them to find out what we can do to help them. What do they want? It's not us telling them how to grow, or how to create jobs, it's them telling us what they need to create jobs," said Lt. Governor Spencer Cox, (R) Utah.

And along with those jobs, some may find a new purpose.

"We believe we save lives everyday. We save over 30,000 lives a year, and ten times that many injuries," said Leavitt.

The road tour will make stops for all 25 of those counties. It will run through September, 2017.
