CEDAR CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A man filling up his tank is nearly carjacked Thursday according to Cedar City police.
Police said they received a call from the Shell station at 1355 South Main St. around 10:30 Thursday morning. A man reported he was threatened by someone trying to take his car.
"The suspect approached him and demanded his car keys. ... he grabbed the fuel nozzle from the tank of his car, flicked the lighter, and threatened him with it so he backed away,” said Sgt. Jerry Womack with Cedar City police.
Police said the suspect got into the victim’s car still holding onto the gas nozzle.
"The victim then got into the passenger side, and said ‘get out of my car,’ and the suspect sprayed him with gasoline. That incapacitated him for a few minutes, and so the suspect got out of his car and got into another vehicle,” said Sgt. Womack.
Police said the suspect took off and was spotted by a Parowan police officer, who called for backup. Multiple agencies responded.
"Eventually spikes were deployed on the freeway at about mile marker 71, the vehicle continued until about mile marker 69 where it stopped and then the suspect fled the vehicle, and wouldn't comply with officers, so eventually he was Tasered and taken into custody,” said Sgt. Womack.
Police arrested Dennis Bryan Ruiz, 33, who was taken to the hospital and charged with aggravated robbery.
