Pumpkins in the Spotlight

Pumpkins are a big deal in Utah and around the country,  and filmmaker Daria Matza is taking notice.

She is telling the story of giant pumpkins in her film Rise of the Giants. The film shows how giant pumpkins are grown, from seed to weigh-off, including the current world record holder who grew a 2032lb pumpkin!

Rise of the Giants follows growers in the Utah Club. In 2012 Utah weighed more giant pumpkins that anywhere else in the world. The film also covers the story of the Spanish Fork Jail where, on their 7 acre garden, inmates attempt to grow their own giant pumpkin. Rise of the Giants takes you inside the mind of the growers after the weigh off. Did you know some of them turn their large pumpkins into boats to race in Sugarhouse park? Or that other pumpkins take a wild ride down the Colorado River in Moab?

Giant pumpkin growing isn't just about gardening; it's about hard work, community, connection to our American roots and the celebration of harvest. The film discovers the roots of the pumpkin as a symbol of fall and it's vital role in the pilgrims survival, including the first Thanksgiving.
