Ronald McDonald House and Primary Children’s Hospital is celebrating it's one year anniversary of it's family room.
The family room is the largest in the world and provides a home away from home for 5,000 families with a child at Primary Children's Hospital allowing parents to be just feet away from their child's bed side.
"When you are here it just is pulling your life and you have meeting with other families of who has the worst story almost and somehow that helps,” said Colby Holt who spent several days and nights at the Family Room.
Holt tells Good 4 Utah he was one of the first to stay at the family room when it opened it's doors one year ago while his 2 year old daughter was in the ICU. “She was at a children's b-day party and somebody gave her tiki torch fluid thinking it was apple juice and basically aspirated it and torched her lungs,” said Holt.
Holt recalls that horrifying time in his life like it was yesterday. Now over a year later he is not only grateful for his daughter’s life but the place he called home for that time as well. “Anytime you just need a break or solace or even just someone to talk to it was a great place to come. I took naps here all the time just because it was a place to getaway,” said Holt.
The 3,500 square foot family room not only provided holt and his family with a place to rest, but a place to shower, eat, do laundry or just escape.
It has absolutely amazed us with the amount of use that we've seen over the last year we've had over 51 thousand individual visits and that accounts for about 5,000 families,” said Vickie Moschetti spokesperson for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area, Inc.
Now, one year later, Holt says he and his wife plan on giving back. "We are definitely coming back to cook meals here and there at least twice a year just because of what this place did for us,” said Holt.
“Over 2,000 volunteer hours and 180 meals were also provided by the community to get involved contact kacie at 801.363.4663 or email Kacie@rmhslc.org also visit www.ronaldmcdonaldhouseutah.org for more information.
