Dr. Stone's first tip... turn off the television. Get your kids outside in the fresh air and playing. They will get their exercise, and that means better health. They also will not be seeing some of the junk food ads on TV that makes them crave food that's bad for them.
He says make sure to supervise children when they're playing outside. Go for walks with them, take them to the park and play ball!
But, because of summer heat there are some risks to being outside. Dr. Stone says kids can get over-heated, they can even suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. He suggests to have them wear hats, clothes that cover up, and sunscreen. Perhaps the biggest thing to make sure kids are doing is drinking plenty of water.
When it comes to sunscreen, make sure it's 30 SPF to 50 SPF. And, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection. Kids should have sunscreen re-applied every couple of hours, and more often when they're swimming.
There is a risk of Cryptosporidium in swimming pools. That's a nasty stomach bug. Dr. Stone hasn't seen any cases for awhile, but it is out there. He recommends bathing with soap and water before entering a pool. If you have babies in swim diapers, change them at least once an hour. And, make sure your kids are taking bathroom breaks.
For kids heading to summer camp, Dr. Stone says it's important to know what environment they'll be in. Even though it's summer, there can be hypothermia in higher elevations and in cold water. Also, know if your kids will be doing activities like horseback riding or bike riding. That way you can send the proper safety equipment with them.
