SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah ) - McDonald's USA is launching the 12th annual Ronald McDonald House Charities "Give a Hand" fundraiser on May 1, 2014.

Customers will be able to give a hand to families in need by purchasing a paper hand at all participating restaurants in the Intermountain area that includes Utah, western Wyoming and eastern Nevada.  Each donation, available in $1, $3 or $5 denominations, supports programs such as the Ronald McDonald houses, that enable families with sick children to stay together during their treatment, helping them cope better and heal faster.  The more hands sold, the more families are helped.

Last year, Intermountain area McDonald's restaurants generated over $45,000 to help provide a home-away-from-home for children and their families who travel to Salt Lake City to receive pediatric care for serious, often life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

The Ronald McDonald house recently received a 40,000 square-foot expansion at 935 East South Temple.
