WEST WEBER, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Having someone try to break into your home while your children are home alone is a fear no parent wants their children to ever go through. However that's exactly what happened to a 13-year-old girl and her little sister Wednesday morning in West Weber. Officers say it was the big sister's bravery that kept them safe.
"We hear knocks at the door and so I tell my little sister to stay where she's at and I go look through the little peep hole and I see two men, and that’s when I start to panic.”
It was at that point 13-year-old Kylee Newell took her 8-year-old little sister Audree by the hand and ran up the stairs to hide in her bedroom closet and called 911.
"It was just one man that came in he came upstairs destroyed my parents bedroom, went to the bathroom and I had the door closed as much as I could without him hearing me and that’s when he came into my bedroom,” said Kylee.
Officers say that man was Robert Keith Paul, 50. They say he busted in through the side door of the home after his attempt to kick open the front door was unsuccessful. His alleged accomplice,Amy Nicole Hulse, 31. Full of fear and trying not to scream from inside the closet, Kylee says she knew she had to keep her composure for the sake of her little sister.
“There were so many what ifs going through my head. I didn't know if he was going to hurt us or just runaway or you never know and that's the scariest thing about it,” said Kylee. Now Kylee's little sister looks up to her big sister even more. “I'm grateful that she saved me and that the robber did not turn around,” said Audree.
Luckily for the two girls the suspect left the bedroom and was caught dead in his tracks by Weber County Sheriff Deputies in the driveway of the home. Kylee's father Russell says he is grateful for their quick response. "To essentially catch the person in the act walking out its pretty quick so there’s a lot of execution on that part to make that happen,” said Russell Newell.
The two suspects are behind bars at the Weber County Jail. The pair has a criminal history and are facing felony charges for residential burglary, theft and possession of methamphetamine. Kylee tells ABC 4 Utah she learned how to handle the situation from her grandpa, parents and school.
