SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Police say a man who was handcuffed by Salt Lake City officers died while in custody early Friday morning.

According to Salt Lake City Police Det. Mike Hamideh, officers were dispatched to 717 South Laconia Court on reports of man who was screaming in the middle of the street.

Once they arrived, Hamideh said officers were able to detain 44-year-old Allen Keith Nelson and handcuff him without incident.

Shortly after he was handcuffed, Hamideh said Nelson began to experience breathing problems, for which he was medically evaluated.

Hamideh said Nelson subsequently stopped breathing and medical personnel declared him deceased on scene.

According to Hamideh, an investigation is ongoing, including a medical examination to detect the cause of Nelson's death.

Hamideh said no Taser was deployed during Nelson's detainment.

Later on Monday, Hamideh backed off his statement that no Taser was deployed.

Hamideh told ABC 4 News that the possibility of a Taser being used on Nelson was part of an investigation.
