Weight Lifting National Championships coming to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) - Utah Weightlifting, Visit Salt Lake and the Utah Sports Commission have partnered to host the 2014 USA Weightlifting National Championships July 17-20 in Salt Lake City. More than a dozen Utahns are preparing to compete.

The event, USA Weightlifting's initial major competition in the Beehive State, will be the first in sports at the Grand America resort since it housed the International Olympic Committee during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In all, more than 400 athletes and 200 coaches from across the United States will participate, making the event the largest Nationals Championships ever.

A state-record 16 athletes will compete from Utah, which fielded just one participant in 2013. California will lead all state contingents with 63 athletes, while Texas (33) and Colorado (20) will round out the top three.
