"As part of the requirement for the class, the groups have to actually start and make a profit with a business," Pilmer said.
One group of students say they had a better idea.
"We put together this event, got a couple of live bands. We got a lot of sponsorship,” said Jordan Carlisle, one of the students who organized the effort.
They are raising money for the Sergeant Cory Wride Foundation for Protection. Wride was a Sergeant for the Utah County Sherriff's Office who died when someone shot him through his windshield ten weeks ago.
"My life has never been worse. It's been the darkest… It's changed our whole family dynamic. It's changed everything," said Wride’s wife, Nannette Wride.
Wride also says she wants to make just one good thing come out of this tragic turn in her life. She wants to protect other police officers throughout the state. They are starting with bullet proof windshields for the Utah County Sherriff’s Office.
So far, the UVU students have raised $9,000 to donate to Wride's foundation. They estimate that by the time the night is over, they’ll have more than $10,000.
