Enos Ledezma says his mom is still so shaken up she didn’t want to appear on camera, but he says she was accused of recording the big screen with her cell phone Saturday night at the Provo Towne Center Cinemark Theater.
She was seated in the theater about to watch Brick Mansions when his dad came to drop off her cell phone realizing she forgot it. Ten minutes later Ledezma says his mom was approached by a Cinemark manager and a Provo police officer.
“She explained everything that happened, she voluntarily took the phone, that was silenced, not breaking any Cinemark policies, out of her pocket and gave it to them and said ‘you can look I haven't been recording anything’,” he said.
The phone wasn’t even capable of recording video, Ledezma says.
“It doesn’t even have any memory because she took pictures of one of her grand-daughters birthdays on Friday and filled up the camera,” he said. “And even then she was asking me how to get to the camera to take the pictures.”
But Ledezma says the manager didn't even ask to see the phone to see if she had in fact recorded. Instead he says he only accused and embarrassed her.
“He kept referring to her as ‘the woman who was recording the movie’, she felt vey belittled she felt very de humanized,” he said.
Ledezma wonders if the close captioning device his mom uses, something Cinemark provides free of charge to hard of hearing customers, may have confused who ever accused her.
“But for Cinemark to kick her out for using their own closed captioning devices, it's absurd,” he said.
Now after venting on his blog, all Ledezma wants is an apology.
“We’re cine-philes, we love the movies,” he said. “We want to have that safe space that the movies were for our family.”
ABC 4 Utah reached out to the management at the Provo Town Center theater. A manger referred our call to the Cinemark corporate office. ABC 4 Utah’s phone call has not been returned. As of news time, the Provo police department has yet to return a phone call as well.
