Sears demolished for bigger Dillard's at Fashion Place

MURRAY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – After 40 years at Fashion Place Mall, Sears is no more, but shoppers can look forward to a bigger and better Dillard’s to replace it. "It's going to be about 200-thousand square feet and were making way for that today as we start demolition on this building."6:18, said Celeste Dorris, general manager of Fashion Place Mall.

The new departments store will be 20,000 square feet larger than its existing Fashion place location with the latest and greatest technology allowing shoppers to have an improved experience.“They have a lot of great technology in place now with remote POS systems and different things that can allow shoppers to interact more effectively with the sales people,” said Dorris.

However, with all the construction and improvements to the mall in recent years it has some questioning if the cost is worth it."It’s not struggling. It is actually doing very well and that is why we are able to make these new developments happen and the retailers are recognizing that and we are in a really great place right now economically,” said Natalie Watson, senior marketing manager for Fashion Place Mall.

As for the current Dillard’s it will stay open for business, but what will replace the north end building remains a mystery. However, other changes coming our way include Utah's first Container Store. "Macy's recently closed just a couple weeks ago in their space here and were going to back fill that with the container store so their an awesome national retailer that a lot of people are very excited about bringing to Utah,” said Dorris.

The demolition is expected to take about four weeks to complete and the new Dillard’s will open their doors by spring of 2015.
