SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) -- A new report is out on downtown Salt Lake... and business is booming.

"By almost every measure downtown is thriving," says Jason Mathis with the Downtown Alliance.

The group just released the 2014 State of Downtown. It shows more people are shopping, office buildings are filling up, and more folks are living downtown than ever before.

"Retail sales in downtown are at all time high, 800 million dollars last year," Mathis says.

People feel there's a lot of reasons to grab your friends, maybe hit Trax and visit the center of Salt Lake City.

People interviewed by ABC 4 Utah's Brian Carlson said they like the shopping and the food, especially. But others also complained about parking, driving on the streets and panhandling.

The Downtown Alliance is aware downtown has room to improve, and the alliance is discussing ways to make it better. But today they're celebrating the work that's been done so far.

"Downtown Salt Lake City has made a dramatic transformation in the last five years and we see that trend continuing," Mathis says.
