Police launch neighborhood crime tracking website

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – Salt Lake Police have launched a new website that offers citizens a detailed look at crime trends in their neighborhoods.

The 'Salt Lake City Crime Stats' website allows people to track rates based on area, crime type, and time frame.

"It's something I know I will look at regularly, and I think most people in the neighborhood will," said Bill McKean, a Salt Lake City homeowner.

McKean says he has recently noticed a lot of burglaries happening in his Foothill neighborhood.

"People are pretty concerned about it, and we've had a neighborhood watch recently. A lot of people have been talking about it. What do we do about it?" McKean asked.

Good 4 Utah decided to put the crime stats website to the test. We entered his zip code and sure enough, Mckean's observation matches the data. In fact, the amount of burglaries in his area has doubled since September! Vandalism, on the other hand, shows a continuous decrease. Once again, the statistics match up.

"[The neighborhood hasn't had] too much, in terms of vandalism,” McKean noted.

"So, the website seems pretty accurate to you?" asked Good 4 Utah's Ali Monsen.

"Yeah we think so,” McKean said.

Salt Lake Police are asking for the public's help with the project. They want people to try the website out and then let officers know how user friendly it is.
