Man jailed after West Valley City shooting

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) -- A man is in critical condition and another man is in jail after a shooting Sunday morning in West Valley City.

Police were called to the Overlook Point Apartments, 4640 S. 2970 West, at about 6 a.m. Sunday, where they found a man with a gunshot wound to the head. Police say the man was shot during a failed robbery attempt.

A probable cause affidavit released by the Salt Lake County Jail states that Patrick Van Pham went to the address to rob the victim. Witnesses told police that Pham, 18, went into the apartment's bathroom and that they later heard what sounded like fighting followed by several gunshots. The witnesses then saw Pham exit the bathroom holding a gun, according to the affidavit.

Some of the witnesses grabbed Pham in an attempt to get the gun out of his hands, but Pham fired more shots and almost hit the witnesses, according to police.

Police later located Pham at his residence, where he allegedly admitted to attempting to rob the victim with a gun. Police also found a trash bag containing bloody clothes and a large amount of cash at Pham's residence, according to the affidavit.

Police arrested Pham on suspicion of attempted homicide, aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, obstruction of justice and three counts of discharge of a firearm. Pham's alleged offenses are all felonies.

The victim was in critical condition and was being treated at a hospital as of Sunday afternoon.
