SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) – More than a hundred thousand people went downtown this weekend for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ annual General Conference.
Millions more—worldwide—watched from home or from church houses as LDS leaders addressed Latter-day Saints. One key theme leaders seemed to come back to was focusing on and loving others.
"Let us not demean of belittle. Rather let us be compassionate and encouraging. We must be careful that we do not destroy another person's confidence," said the Prophet of the church, President Thomas S. Monson.
Church leaders also counseled members to stand firm in their beliefs, especially living in this quickly-changing world.
"A characteristic of our age is that if people want any gods at all, they want them to be gods who do not demand much; comfortable gods, smooth gods, who not only don't rock the boat, but don't even row it." said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
Today the Presiding Bishop of the church, Bishop Gary E. Stevensen, talked about the Olympics. He used Noel Pikus Pace—a Mormon Olympian—as an example for Latter-day Saints.
"We will never forget her leap into the stands to embrace her family after crossing the finish line, exclaiming, 'We did it!' Years of preparation pays off. We saw her Young Women’s medallion around her neck as a silver medal was placed beside it," Stevensen said.
Dangers of the internet was another big topic today.
“Satan can keep us busy, distracted, and infected by sifting through information that can be pure garbage. One... One should not roam through garbage,” said Marcos Aidukaitis of the Seventy.
Church leaders smiled and waved as they made their way out of the conference center. The next session will commence this October.
"It's great to be in this conference center with all the other members and the choir. It's very spiritual. It's like being in the temple. I look forward to it again in six months," said David Lutz, a conference-goer.
