Homeless in Salt Lake celebrate Easter

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Thousands of homeless people gathered at Pioneer Park Sunday to celebrate what they do have.

They say they are grateful.  They are celebrating their faith in Jesus Christ this Easter Sunday.

"Hallelujah!  Put your hands together because God is good!" one woman sang.

"I thank God for the great music we have, and the great weather we have today on Easter Sunday—the day that God has made,” said Yolanda Favaroth, one of the homeless people participating in Sunday’s events.

Everyone was welcome to join in with the festivities.

"I’m not a member of the church,” one man said.  “That's going to take a little longer, but they're doing great things—trying to help people like us get off the streets."

The Salt Lake City Mission provided the meal.  Volunteers, young and old, came to help make the day memorable.

"We died eggs and passed them out to the homeless," one girl said.

Some donate time and money because they know what it is like to find yourself down in the dumps.

"I came into the Mission almost ten years ago, and it saved my life just to have that personal relationship with Jesus,” said Brad Jaques, spokesman for Salt Lake City Mission.

They say Jesus is who motivates them and turns their rags to riches every day.

"I've been clean and sober--not even smoking a cigarette, so I feel great," said Darren Hunt, a homeless man.

"I just thank God.  I praise Him.  He's worthy to be praised," said Favaroth.

The Salt Lake Mission volunteers say they do want to share one specific message:

"We have forgiveness through Christ.  We just want to share that love with everybody we can today," said Jaques.

Some say hearing that message is exactly what they have needed.

"I'm homeless and it makes me feel so good inside to know that somebody loves me… Me. Somebody really cares about me,” said Tammy Rose, a grateful recipient of today’s festivities.

The Salt Lake City Mission will host another dinner this Memorial Day.  They say they are always looking for more volunteers.
