BYU Soccer Player Finds Success On And Off The Field

PROVO (ABC4 News) - It sounds cliché and silly to say that Garrett Gee is goal-oriented but it's also very accurate. The Brigham Young University junior has put in a lot of hard work on the soccer field and in the business world as has seen it pay off.

"I have been into soccer literally as long as I can remember," Gee told ABC4 News Wednesday.

The 25 year old from Alpine, Utah is the co-captain of the Cougars, helping them to their first Premier Development League playoff berth in seven years. He scored a goal in the PDL season opener against the Fresno Fuego and another versus the Las Vegas Mobsters in May.
On the field, Garrett is an attacking midfielder but he says that his position off the field is just as much fun and much more lucrative.

Garrett is the founder and CEO of Scan, a company that creates and maintains quick response codes, those funny looking squares that deliver information directly into your smart phone.

"Scan helps businesses connect with their customers on their mobile device," Gee said. "The company at it's last valuation was valued at about 23 million dollars."

Scan has made Garrett rich - and famous. The millionaire midfielder appeared on ABC's Shark Tank last October.

"Nothing about talking to the Sharks was difficult or scary," Gee said. "It was the bright lights, the cameras like all that. I was super nervous and really scared the whole time."

Garrett didn't get any money out of the Sharks but did get valuable prime time exposure for Scan.

"The exposure was fabulous for us," Gee said. "The app immediately boosted to the number one spot in our category and has continued to have success from that."

Garrett continues to move seamlessly in his trademark Adidas flip-flops from an investor pitch to the soccer pitch.

"What I've seen to my own surprise is that what I learn on the soccer field directly benefits my abilities and success at Scan and vice-versa," Gee said. "One of the things that ties those two together has been the principle of teamwork."

Gee says he's excited about the future of Scan but right now he's mainly focused on BYU's playoff match versus the Ventura County Fusion Saturday night in Las Vegas.
