SALT LAKE CITY – (ABC 4 News) - For the past 11 years, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff walked the halls of the State Capitol, but come January, he’ll be moving to the nation’s capital.

Packing boxes are scattered in his office. For the man who's served since 2001, the end of his chapter in public service is bittersweet.

“Just coming into this state capitol building, or leaving at night, you know, when it's late and the lights are on, I just have to pinch myself sometimes, wow, I was really lucky," said Shurtleff.

The only three-term Utah Attorney General in history, Shurtleff didn't seek re-election in 2012.

“Public life is hard on families, and it's been very hard on mine. The other reason is just, you know, no one is supposed to be in office forever,” explained Shurtleff.

And once he leaves, plans include a job with an international law firm in Washington D.C. -Troutman Sanders. He's excited, but the change leaves him wondering.

“I have to wonder if I will have the satisfaction in going forward in the private sector, and I just don't know. …Going around teaching in schools all over the state, creating the Amber Alert, which, you know, saved lives, putting 600 child abusers behind bars, I mean there are some great rewards in knowing you're actually doing things, creating programs that saves lives," said Shurtleff.

Shurtleff will keep an office in Utah, and his family will stay. He's talked openly about his teenage daughter's mental health, and feels this new position will help.

“She's doing great, working full time, and she's off and on with some issues, she's moved home recently, which is nice. …Maybe I can have her, and my other kids, to travel from time to time,” Shurtleff explained.

He’s looking forward to working with the firm’s state attorneys general team.

Mark Shurtleff's last day in office is January 6th.
