Wirth Watching: Memories of 'This Is The Place' monument dedication

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 UTAH) - Since 1947, Mahonri Young's sculpture has showed the world that this is the place.

There were thousands at the bottom the day it was dedicated on July 24, 1947. The chair of the dedication was future Latter-day Saint church president David O. Mckay.

They set the last stone at the dedication. The dignitaries all had a hand at the trowel and the monument was done.

J. Reuben Clark of the LDS church first presidency was also part of the program. He brought his young granddaughters to the gathering. They stood in awe.

They remembered everyone was dressed up, even though it was unusually hot that day. I checked. It was 94 degrees that day out there in the sun.

And the dressed up people listened as LDS church president George Albert Smith paid tribute to the pioneers.
