U of U surgeons perform transplant with organ from donor with Hepatitis C

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Utah) - A medical first at the University of Utah hospital; surgeons have performed what is believed to be the first kidney transplant in Utah using an organ from a donor with Hepatitis C.

The recipient is 61-year -old West Valley man also has Hepatitis C as well as kidney disease.

New life-saving drugs with high cure rates are available for Hepatitis C, but they're not approved for people who also have kidney disease.

This transplant makes it possible for this West Valley man to receive those drugs.
