Two killed in head-on collision on SR-73

EAGLE MOUNTAIN (ABC 4 Utah) - Two people is confirmed dead in a head-on collision just west of Eagle Mountain Thursday afternoon.

It happened on State Route 73 near mile marker 31 around 1:30 p.m. 

It was a two-car head on collision. One car was headed eastbound with just the driver inside and drifted over into the westbound lane and struck a vehicle with four people inside. The person who died was one of the four people. 

One person has been flown by Life Flight in extremely critical condition. 

Sgt. Spencer Cannon with Utah County Sheriff's Office says that there is evidence that alcohol may been involved. This would be the second fatal DUI crash on this stretch of road since May. 

SR 73 westbound is closed at 1750 East in Eagle Mountain due to the crash.

An Eagle Mountain woman driving east on SR-73, and a 15-year-old Eagle Mountain girl driving west, were both killed when their cars collided head on.

It about 1:36 p.m. Thursday on SR-73 at mile marker 31. A gold Ford Fusion was driving east with one occupant. A white Chevrolet Cruze was driving west with four occupants.

Investigators say a witness saw the east bound car drift left over the center line. The driver of the west bound car was unable to avoid a collision.

The front seat passenger in the white Chevrolet was killed on impact. She, and the other three occupants of her vehicle were all wearing seat belts. The driver was the father of the girl who died. Also in the car were the victim's 10 and 7-year-old brothers.

The driver of the Ford Fusion was in extremely critical condition. Investigators did not know if she was wearing a seat belt, but she was not ejected from her car.

Medical personnel treated this victim with CPR and LifeFlight responded and transported her to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo where she was later pronounced dead.

Deputies investigating the crash found an open container of alcohol in the Ford Fusion. They are investigating to determine if alcohol might have been a factor in this crash.

The passenger in the west bound Chevrolet Cruze was Catherine Hancock, age 15, of Eagle Mountain. The driver and sole occupant of the Ford Fusion was Jennifer Ashley Taft Bailey, age 28, also of Eagle Mountain.
