Toddler shot by 3-year-old sister dies in hospital

CACHE COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) -- A 2-year-old boy who was accidentally shot by his 3-year-old sister has died, officials announced Saturday.

According to the Cache County Sheriff's Office, the boy was shot in the stomach by a .22 caliber rifle Friday evening inside his family's residence at 3616 W. 2200 South in College Ward, an unincorporated community south of Logan. Officials say the rifle was left in the living room unloaded but with live rounds in the magazine.

Sheriff's office investigators believe the girl had to manipulate the action enough to chamber a live round before the shot was fired.

Both the mother and father were home during the incident, and the mother was able to quickly call for help after hearing the gun go off. The boy was taken to Logan Regional Hospital where he was rushed into surgery. He was then airlifted to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Investigators learned on Saturday that the boy succumbed to his injury.

A press release from the Cache County Sheriff's Office states that the case will be referred to the Cache County Attorney's Office. The name of the victim was not released Saturday.

"This is a stark reminder of the importance of keeping all kinds of weapons out of reach of children," the release reads. "We urge any and all to take an inventory of their current practices in storing guns and ammunition. Incidents like this are devastating, and the best thing we can do from here is learn from the experience and make ourselves more vigilant and safe."
