Three people killed in shootings in Logan

LOGAN, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A member of the Utah Army National Guard is suspected of opening fire and killing two people in an apartment complex.

A short while later, 23-year-old Jared J. Toman took his own life with a single gunshot at a nearby apartment.
Logan police identified the victims as 19-year-old Mackenzie Madden and 25-year-old Johnathan Jacob Sadler. Both

It all started around midnight when there was a cry for help in a Logan neighborhood.

“I hear a girl scream then a quick session of shots, bang, bang, bang,” says Zack Taylor who lives across the street from the victim’s apartment at 636 East and 500 North..
Seconds later Taylor says someone jumps into a pickup truck.

“This guy then comes peeling out with his truck and heads down the street,” says Taylor. “Actually (he) stops at the stop sign and peeled off again.

A few minutes later, Logan police arrived. They found two bodies inside apartment C.

“There is a 19-year old female found deceased in her room,” says Lt. Rob Peterson. (She) appeared to have been shot several times.”

Police identify her as Mackenzie Madden. Police say 25-year old Johnathan Sadler was also in the apartment with Madden. Police say he too was shot several times.
About a half hour later, police get a second 911 call and arrive at a second location, 1693 North and 400 West. Inside police find another dead body. Police say 23 year old Jared Tolman killed himself.

“The female victim is acquainted with the individual that we believe was the shooter,” says Peterson. “They are acquainted. What their relationship was, I don't know."

Friends who didn’t want to be identified claim Madden once dated Tolman. Logan police aren’t sure if it was a dating relationship.

On Tolman’s Facebook there is a picture of him dressed in military fatigues. He is a member of Utah's Army National Guard with the 19th Special Forces. The guard sends out this statement to the media: "Spc. Jared Tolman, was a member of the Utah National Guard. He joined the Utah guard in 2009 as a supply specialist. He had no overseas deployments during his career. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families during this difficult time."

Madden was a student at Utah State University majoring in socialogy. A website shows that she graduated from Hillcrest High in Midvale. It was her apartment where Tolman broke into.

The second victim who was with Madden was 25 year old Johnathan Sadler of Logan.

“They are heartbroken,” says Gregg Miller, a family friend. “They don't understand. Everybody is searching for answers.”

Tolman is from Washington and graduated in May from USU where he was enrolled in the Army ROTC.

Lt. Peterson says he was looking for a third victim when he allegedly broke into the second apartment.

“He was planning to assault him,” says Lt. Peterson. “When he didn’t find him he went into the bedroom and shot himself.”
