Snow causes airport, road closures in southern Utah

- ST. GEORGE (ABC 4 Utah) -- Interstate 15 between St. George and Mesquite, Nevada was closed Sunday morning after the region was hit by a heavy snowstorm the day before.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reported early Sunday morning that most of I-15 in northwest Arizona was closed because of icy conditions, starting near the Utah border.

Air travel also was affected. The City of St. George's  reported Saturday evening that the St. George Municipal Airport was closed. The airport reopened late Sunday morning, but the city said commercial flights out of the area could still be affected.

The city also reported snow packed roadways except on arterial routes that got more traffic. Drivers were urged to avoid hills such as Foremaster Drive, Tonaquint Drive between Bloomington and Southgate, or Brigham Road.

St. George Police received 10 reports of crashes between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday.

Sunday services for multiple churches in the city also were cancelled. Cancelled meetings included those from Calvary Chapel, Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, St. George Community Church, The Springs Campus of South Mountain Community Church and various wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
