SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Sandy City Police Department spent today informing the public of the month of October being National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

A balloon release was held today, with each balloon representing an adult victim of physical domestic violence.

The city has also put 610 pinwheels in a field which represent the 610 children that witnessed domestic violence in Sandy City this last year.

The numbers of domestic violence cases within the city are going down, advocates say, which could, in part, be attributed to the help that is available.

"We try to let people know that there are crisis lines and that there is victim advocates that can help them and offer resources," said Victim Advocate Volunteer Coordinator, Vickie Bushman.

Bushman also wanted to make sure that people know there are domestic violence shelters that they can go to if they are in an unsafe environment.
