SAN JUAN COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) –A pilot was killed when his plane crashed in the La Sal Mountains Thursday.

Around 1 p.m. the plane was found in the La Sal Mountains located in a steep ravine directly between Medicine Lake and Beaver Lake and south of the La Sal Mountain Pass road.

The airplane had crashed into the mountainside killing the pilot, Miles Reece of Colorado on impact.

Other than Reece, the plane only contained camping equipment. No other passengers were on board.

Reece was being accompanied by another plane piloted by his friend Douglas Berry of New Mexico.

Reece was en route to the Idaho backcountry to go camping. He flew out of the Durango, Colorado airport and was planning on stopping in Brigham City, Utah to refuel.

Reece was accompanied by another plane being piloted by friend, Douglas Berry of New Mexico.

The two pilots were in radio contact. As they entered the La Sal Mountain Range, the planes disappeared from Grand Junction, Colorado radar.

After passing the mountain range, only Berry's plane appeared back on radar. Berry turned around and flew back to where he last had talked to Reece but was unable to locate him.

He then turned back towards the north and continued on to Brigham City hoping that Reece was only having radio problems and would meet up with him in at their planned rendezvous point.

After several hours of waiting on Reece in Brigham City with no contact from Reece, Berry contacted authorities to report the missing plane.
