Ogden police arrest man in death of 14-month-old baby girl

OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - Adam Barney admitted to hitting a child several times and squeezing her before calling police. That's when they arrested him for child abuse homicide.

Police were called out to the Western Colony Inn around 6 PM Monday night for a child just over a year old that was not breathing.

“They determined the baby was deceased and at that point it begins the investigation into the suspicious death of the child,” said Lt. Danielle Croyle with the Ogden Police Department.

Police arrested 23-year-old Adam Joseph Barney.

“He had confessed to striking the child several times and squeezing her substantially causing significant injuries,” said the Lieutenant.

The mother was out when the incident happened. Police say there were two other children inside the room when the abuse occurred. They have been taken in by the Department of Children and Family Services.

“Even though it may seem, because we have an arrest, we are still in the preliminary stages of this investigation. There are still lots for us to conduct and work with,” said Lt. Croyle.

The child that has passed away is with the medical examiner. An autopsy will be done on the child for prior injuries. As for the other two children, they will be interviewed by trained personnel later on Tuesday.

Adam Barney could be in front of the judges as early as Wednesday if not Thursday to answer for the charges against him.
