SALT LAKE CITY, (ABC 4 Utah) – One of the world's leading cancer research and treatment centers is growing.

The Huntsman Cancer Institute, at the University of Utah announced plans for a multimillion dollar expansion.

The project will double the space for research and further the mission of finding causes and cures for the deadly disease.

One in two men will have cancer in their lifetime, for women it's one in three.

"We're deeply concerned about the fact cancer impacts virtually every family. Not only here in Utah, but throughout America," said Jon Huntsman Sr., Founder, of the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Huntsman’s mother and father both died of cancer and he has had four bouts with the disease himself.

That's why he is dedicated to putting an end to this vicious killer.

"We are very honored and very humbled to announce tonight that we will be donating $100,000,000 to construct a new division of the Huntsman Cancer Institute," said Huntsman.

That division will be a 220,000 square foot research building.

It will be called the Primary Children's and Families' Cancer Research Center at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

The name reflects a substantial donation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a focused mission.

“I will dwell primarily on finding solutions to cancers for children and teenagers and adults where children have had cancer in their family," said Huntsman.

With some major breakthroughs on the verge, the need is now.

"It can't be open soon enough. We need this additional space, we need these breakthroughs, we need these discoveries," said David Huntsman, President, of the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

To fight back against a disease that claims 7,500,000 lives across the globe each year.

This new addition will be the fourth major construction phase for HCI.

The six floor expansion is being designed right now, construction will begin next year and will take 18 to 24 months.
