WEBER COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A family tried to do everything they could to save their father after he had health problems while hiking.
Deputies say the father passed away while hiking/camping in Wheatgrass Canyon. That man's name has not been released. Deputies still need to go up the mountain to retrieve his body.
The Weber County Sheriff's Office says they got the call around 5 PM Wednesday night. It took hours for family members to get to an area with service to call 9-1-1.
The family was deep in the Wheatgrass Canyon and terrain became a problem.
This all started in the morning when the 46-year-old father started to complain about health issues. His daughter in law began hiking back down the mountain to get help.
Medics tried to life flight the man out of the canyon but it became too difficult. A horse search and rescue team was sent in but they could not reach the father because of the terrain and lack of sunlight.
Emergency crews were able to get the family out. The mother was air lifted out of the canyon. Authorities did not release details on her condition.
Deputies will go back into Wheatgrass canyon Thursday and retrieve the man’s body.
