Jordan, Bountiful win baseball state titles

OREM, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - Bountiful High has worked the last 26 years for another state baseball title, but finally the wait is over.

The Braves beat Spanish Fork to win the 4A championship. 6-4. Ryan Curtis had a home run and 4 RBI, while Parker DePasquale went the distance on the mound for the victory.

"It's incredible," said Curtis. "It's such a good feeling, I'm just overwhelmed right now. I can't even describe it, it's just that feeling you have when you work so hard and it finally pays off."

Sam Merrill capped a brilliant career at Bountiful with a basketball and baseball championship in his senior season.

"Basketball was a little bit of a relief to win," said Merrill, who is bound for Utah State next year. "But I can't describe how good this feels right now. To be able to win it with all my best friends and go out on our senior years on a high note is so awesome."

Jordan and Pleasant Grove locked up a quite a battle for the 5A title. The Vikings beat the Beetdiggers in the first game, 4-3 as Payton Henry doubled in the go-ahead runs to force a deciding game.

Morgan Gomez was masterful on the mound, not allowing a single hit after the third inning as Jordan won its first state title since 2007, 4-3.

Mason Krueger hit a solo home run in the 3rd to break a 1-1 tie, while Drew Lisk singled home two more runs to give Jordan a 4-1 lead, and the Beetdiggers held on for the victory.

"It just shows how much we battle and how much we don't give up," said senior Colton Shaver. "I'm so proud of every single one of these guys. They're my brothers and my family together."

"It wasn't a bad time to break out my first home run of the year," said Krueger. "It's such an incredible feeling."
