Gibb, Patterson win beach volleyball title in front of home fans

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - Hometown favorites Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson wrapped up the AVP Salt Lake City Open by defeating Ryan Dougherty and Nick Lucena in a thrilling final to win their first title of the season.

Gibb, a former Bountiful High and University of Utah grad teamed with Patterson, a former BYU star, to come from behind in the final game to win, 17-21, 21-17, 17-15. Gibb and Patterson remained undefeated, going 5-0 in the tournament en route to the team’s first title of the year and fifth AVP title since joining forces in 2013.

Gibb and Patterson trailed 14-11 in the third game, only to win six of the final seven points to claim victory in front of a raucous crowd.

The top-seeded women’s team – three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and Olympic silver medalist April Ross – won their third consecutive AVP title, going undefeated (5-0) in Salt Lake City adding to their 15-0 record on tour in 2014. Walsh Jennings and Ross defeated third seeds Emily Day and Summer Ross, 21-14, 21-17 in their semifinal match before downing second seeds Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat in the final, 21-16, 21-15.

With the win, Walsh Jennings – the all-time winningest female in beach volleyball history with 120 titles - earned her 70th career victory in domestic competition, setting a record for the U.S. wins mark, previously held by her long-time former partner, Misty May-Treanor. For Ross, it was her second consecutive Salt Lake City Open win, as she took home the inaugural title in 2013 with former teammate Jen Kessy.
