Gas prices increase transit ridership

- SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A trade group for transit agencies says rising gasoline prices were behind a 34-percent ridership increase on Utah's bus and light-rail systems last year.

The Utah Transit Authority says two new TRAX lines also boosted ridership.

Salt Lake City had the nation's second biggest increase in ridership for light rail in the country, second only to Memphis, Tenn.

The American Public Transportation Association crunched the numbers for 27 light-rail systems across the country.

The association says rising gas prices are steering more people to mass transit.
