Vicki Golden races against the boys, and in 2011 made history by becoming the first woman ever to qualify for an Arenacross main event. Then last week, Golden made more history by becoming the first female to earn her Supercross license.
"I started when I was seven," she said about her love for dirt bikes. "My older brother, who is actually seven years older than me, and I just wanted to do anything that he wanted."
Now, the boys want to follow in Golden's tracks. But she still hears the doubters, that she doesn't belong on the same dirt.
"No matter what I do, it's still there," Golden said. "People said I couldn't earn a [Supercross] license or a race in a night show here. Then it was like, 'Oh, you can't make main events.' It will just progress as much as I do."
At 21, Golden is progressing at a tremendous rate. Some racers get exemptions to race on the Supercross tour, but Golden earned it the old-fashioned way -- on the track.
"No one can say I can't go to Supercross," she said. "I qualified just like everyone else who would be on the gate. I still have a lot to practice and work on, so if I do it, I'm going to do it next year when I'm 100 percent prepared. It's a big step for me, and I'm sure I am ready bike skill wise, but mentally it's just too big of a step right now."
Even though she's been accepted on the Arenacross tour, the men still don't want to lose to her.
"It's almost worse, because when we're racing out there, no one wants to get beat by a girl," Golden said.
"I think some guys have their pride on the line," said Gray Davenport, an Arenacross racer from Lehi. "But when they're that good, you have to accept it I guess. She's up and coming and doing what she loves. They don't really have a series just for women, so she's just doing what she has to do to be able to race."
There is no doubt Golden is a role model and inspiration for young girls all over the country, but that's not why she races.
"I don't really let it get to me," she said. "I'm pretty humble, so I just kind of do what I do. I just ride my dirt bike and I"m thankful to make a living on it. It's just one of those things where that's just kind of a bonus for me. The real blessing for me is just being able to ride my dirt bike."
Vicki Golden and the Arenacross tour hits Energy Solutions Arena Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
