SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A 49-year-old Sandy man is dead after driving his SUV into a construction site Saturday night.

Around 10:30 p.m., Sandy police were dispatched to the area of 850 East and 9400 South where a man driving an SUV had reportedly hit a parked excavator, said Lt. Jeff Duval of the Sandy City Police Department.

Due to the construction zone located in the area, traffic patterns have been altered where the man was traveling - a flashing directional sign, as well as large construction cones are visible where traffic is diverted.

According to police the victim was traveling at a high rate of speed and did not follow traffic pattern information, veering off the main roadway, hitting the excavator.

Police believe alcohol was involved, said Duval.
