Desert Hills wins first state title on final play

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - In just its 6th year of existence, Desert Hills has won its first state championship. The Thunder beat Pine View 27-21 to claim the 3AA title on the final play of the game.

With six seconds left, Landen Broadhead took the handoff and bulled his way in from two yards out as time expired, giving Desert Hills the victory.

"We were going to kick a field goal, but we had trust that Landen would get it in," said quarterback Nick Warmsley. "We had trust that our line would get it done. We got it done and now we're state champions. It's the greatest feeling in the world."

The Thunder jumped out to the early lead in the first half. Broadhead scored his first touchdown of the game, and Nick Warmsley connected with Braden Reber on a 37-yard touchdown to give Desert Hills a 14-0 lead.

Pine View stormed back to score the next 21 points on two touchdown runs by Pano Tiatia and a 49-yard scoring pass from Kody Wilstead to Bladen Hosner.

Trailing 21-14, Desert Hills tied the game with just over six minutes left on a 2-yard touchdown run by Warmsley. The defense then held Pine View, setting up the last-second dramatics.

"We had faith in our coach, we had faith in the game plan and everything that happened," said Broadhead. "We put in work."

"We knew we could get those two yards," added offensive lineman Brock Doman. "So we put it on each other's backs and we did everything we could to get into the end zone. There are no words to describe how I'm feeling right now. It's the best feeling I ever felt."

The Desert Hills defense also deserves a lot of credit, picking off Wilstead four times.
