DELTA (ABC 4 Utah)- An annual tradition turned into a deadly accident Friday night.

According to the Millard County Sheriff’s Office, Robert Steele, 50-years-old from Nephi, was killed during the Demolition Derby held in Delta Friday.

Police say Steele was a visiting official at the derby and had “Situated himself behind a dirt berm wall to have access to the arena.”

During one of the heats a derby car went over the berm Steele was sitting behind and struck him.

Officials say several people from the stands jumped the fence to assist the ambulance crews on stand-by.

Steele was transported to the Delta Hospital but was pronounced dead within minutes.

This incident is still under investigation.
