KEARNS, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – An investigation is underway in Kearns after a woman that was hit by two cars while crossing the street died, police say.
It happened at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday near 5400 South and 5600 West.
Unified Police say the 43-year-old woman tried to cross the street on 5400 South when two cars hit her instantly. There are no lights in the area of the accident. Police tell ABC4 Utah’s Brittany Johnson that there’s no crosswalk and the woman was wearing dark clothes. They say with those factors it was hard for drivers to see the woman.
“This is a tragic, tragic accident,” said Detective Chuck Malm, Unified Police Department. “It’s just a reminder to pedestrians walking in the early morning hours or late in the evening. You may see headlights but it doesn't’t mean the drivers can see you. You want to take extra precautions.”
Police don’t know where the woman was headed but believe she had just left an adult group home in the area.
“We believe our victim here is mentally handicapped. For some reason she left the group home. Maybe she was upset about something,” Detective Malm said.
At the time this article was posted, 5420 West to 5070 West was still blocked off to all east and westbound traffic while police were on scene investigating.
The two drivers involved in the accident are said to be cooperating with the investigation.
