SALT LAKE COUNTY (ABC4 Utah) For the first time in more than 10 years, Jim Winder was not the Sheriff of Salt Lake County on Monday. His last official day on the job was Sunday and he's heading for Moab to be the new police chief.
So who will replace him to serve out the rest of his term through the end of 2018? It is all up to the Central Committee of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party. For now Undersheriff Scott Carver is the acting Sheriff.
The Democrats have 30 days to pick a replacement. Party Chair Quang Dang says the filing period for candidates will probably open on July 28th. The Sheriff hopefuls will then have 2 weeks to woo the 1,100 members of the Central Committee.
"I imagine they will send out flyers, emails, phone calls," says Dang. "They would reach out to the Central Committee just as they would to the general public. It's just a more condensed group of folks."
The four announced candidates so far are:
Unified Police Sergeant Levi Hughes, a 16 year law enforcement veteran.
Rosie Rivera. She has 24 years under her belt and is currently Chief of Unified Police Services in the Riverton precinct.
42 year veteran Ken Hansen. He's a public information detective for Unified Police.
The only person not working for Unified Police is Fred Ross. He is currently taking a leave of absence from his post as Chief of Police for the Utah Transit Authority.
There may be others who decide to run when the filing period opens later this month.
After the Central Committee members vote on August 11th or 12th, they will submit the winner to the Salt Lake County Council. They will then have 5 days to approve the new Sheriff.
Whoever gets the nod will only have the job through the end of 2018. In November of that year voters will get to choose a new sheriff for a 4 year term starting January 1 of 2019.
