Violent Crash on State Street Leaves 1 Dead

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- One man is dead and three others seriously injured after a violent crash on State Street late Sunday night.

Gary Keller, public information officer for South Salt Lake police, said this was "one of the worst" crashes he's ever seen.

It happened just before midnight under the I-80 overpass on State Street near 2300 South.

Keller says it all started a few blocks down the road. An officer in Salt Lake noticed three people getting in a stolen car at a motel near 1500 South. The officer called for backup as the suspects sped away.

"Within seconds of that car leaving there, the officer heard a crash," Keller said.

When officers got to the scene they say a car that was either exiting the freeway, or attempting to access the freeway was "torn in half".

The man inside was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the three suspects attempted to run, but Keller said he ended up calling for help due to his injuries.

"I'm surprised the three in the car are alive," Keller said.

They are at a local hospital in serious condition. They will remain in police custody.

The victim's identity has not been released.
