NORFOLK, Va. (News4Utah) – Authorities in Virginia have arrested a 70-year-old Utah man in the murder of an elementary school teacher.
Edward A. Shaw, of Sevier, Utah, was charged with one count of 2nd degree murder and one count of use of firearm in commission of a felony.
Police say Shaw shot and killed Caroline M. Hendrix, 50, on New Year’s Eve in Norfolk, Va. During the incident Shaw was also shot by a friend of Hendrix who attempted to come to her aid.
When Norfolk police first arrived on scene, Hendrix was found in her car with multiple gunshot wounds. She later died at the hospital.
Virginia State police later found a man pulled over on the shoulder of Interstate 64 suffering from a gunshot wound. The man told police he had been shot near one of the interstate exits.
The man, later identified as Shaw, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
State police and Norfolk PD investigated a possible connection between the two incidents.
State Police found no evidence to support the “allegation of a road rage shooting” on the interstate.
Investigators eventually charged Shaw with Hendrix’s murder on January 2. When Shaw is released from the hospital, he will be take jail where he will be held without bond.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and detectives have not released any other further details surrounding the shooting.
